Hi Reader-
It seems we are in a time of great change. It's the autumn season here in New England. Leaves are changing color. The temperature is getting cooler.
But beyond the season, there are big changes happening everywhere.
I've heard on a podcast that there are over 50+ elections happening this year. I'm seeing posts from friends who are experiencing the upheaval and devastation of Hurricane Helene in Asheville, North Carolina. Major wars are still going on. My hairdresser just posted that he's closing their business after decades in service because their landlord won't renew the lease. My youngest brother and sister-in-law just gave birth to a beautiful baby boy early this morning!
Life is great at serving up what's expected and what's unexpected.
Regardless of what we receive, we get to be present with it. There may be things we don't prefer but being present means that we get to honor the losses and the wins, feel the emotions, take care of ourselves and make choices that serve us and others going forward.
I'm seeing this through what my friends in Asheville, NC have shared. They've been fortunate in that they didn't completely lose their homes but life as they've known it to be has completely changed. Responding with presence looks like taking it day by day, attending to what's in front of them, what they can do... assessing the damage, clearing trees, cleaning their homes, volunteering to support the community, finding respite when they can, taking care of their own needs, grieving from the unexpected loss, and letting themselves be supported.
While change can feel daunting, it also presents us with new opportunities for growth and transformation. My Asheville friends have highlighted how the community has come together to support each other. Strangers from distant states are there to help. My friends, who tend to be givers and helpers, are finding out that they too get to be supported. So through the tragedy, there can also be beauty.
With whatever changes you're going through, know that you're not alone. I also invite you to:
- Be present to it all: Welcome it and be with all the feels. Don't make the situation or yourself wrong. Without resistance to what it is, you'll feel more in your power. Being present in the moment also helps reduce anxiety about the future. Engage in activities that help you stay grounded, such as meditation, exercise, or spending time in nature.
- Focus on what you can control: While we can't control everything that happens, we can choose how we respond. Identify areas of your life where you can exert influence and take action.
- Embrace curiosity: Approach uncertain situations with curiosity and a desire to learn. Ask questions, seek information, and remain open to new perspectives.
- Seek support: Reach out to friends, family, or a professional therapist/coach for help in self-regulating your nervous system and navigating uncertainty. Sharing your concerns and challenges can help lighten the burden and provide a fresh perspective.
If you'd like to talk about how I can support you through your current life transitions, schedule a time to chat.
May your life be filled with love and wonder,
Nat
